You can use the instructions to install a cat door just as quickly and easily. Before purchasing your new pet door you need to figure out the right size and installation type of doggy door. Determine the Size of Pet Door You Need Pet door manufacturers such as High Tech Pet, Ideal, Petsafe and others classify there pet doors into small, medium, large, extra-large and sometimes super-large sizes.

Cat doors usually come in standard "cat flap" or larger hefty cat sizes. For the very "well fed" cats, a small dog door size may be more suitable. To determine the door size, first determine the minimum flap size.

Do this by making the following measurements on your doggie. Measure the widest part of your dog. Usually, this will be the width across the shoulder. Add 2" to this measurement. This will be the minimum flap width you need.

Next, Measure the distance from the top of your dog's shoulder blades to the belly. Add 3". This will be the minimum height of the flap you need. Select the size doggie door with a flap that has both its width and length measurements greater than your corresponding minimum width and length requirements.

Decide Where You Wish to Install Your Dog Door Your choices are door installation, wall installation, installation in a sliding glass patio door, garage door, screen door or window. When installing in walls, it's best to use the manufacturer's wall installation kit. If the manufacturer does not provide this as an option, we suggest you chose another model that does unless you really love the particular doggie door and you are sufficiently skilled to build an interior frame to seal off the hole you will be making in your wall to install the dog door.

Add 1" to determine the mounting height of the top edge of your doggy door. How to Install a Dog Door in a Door: Notes: When installing in a household door, you may find it desirable to remove the door from its hinges and lay it on saw horses when cutting the opening and installing the dog door. For installation in steel doors or other types of metal doors, we recommend you have it done by a pet door installation professional.

Step 1 - Mark the Corners: Many doggy doors come with a paper template included. If there is no template included, you can use the lock out slide panel as your template. Cut the template out. On your household door, measure from the bottom and place a mark at the mounting height dimension and draw a horizontal line.

Place the top of your template on the line and tape it in place. Mark an X at each of the four corners. If there are holes for mounting screws shown on the template, mark those holes too. If your doggie door requires screws to fasten the frame to your door, drill out those holes using the drill bit size recommended in the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 3 - Mark the Opening: With your pencil and straight edge, draw a straight line between each corner hole using the outside diameter of the holes. Step 4 - Cut Out the Opening: Now, use your jigsaw or circular saw to cut out the opening. With the jigsaw start at one corner.

Insert the blade into the hole and cut along the line to the next hole. If you are using a circular saw, start at one corner just below the hole and cut along the line to the next hole.

You also have the option of installing the dog door in an interior or exterior door as discussed below:. A regular hollow core door is the easiest to install a pet door in, and the complexity increases with different designs and materials such as metal, solid, and panel doors. This is because a door with a very solid or uneven surface will require a little more handiwork than a flat-surface, hollow door. Keep in mind your skill-level when considering which door to install the doggie door in.

Installing a pet door impacts the dynamic of your home. You should expect your pet to spend plenty of time around the area where the door is installed. You might want to rearrange the furniture accordingly to account for higher traffic through this space. Pet doors come in a variety of colors and materials, so you can select whichever you think will best match your door.

The manufacturer of the pet door you purchase will likely provide more detailed instructions specific to your pet door, so make sure to read them.

Once your new pet door arrives and you have decided where to install it, you'll need a few tools. In most cases, you will need the following:. To make drilling easy and accurate, consider making four X marks on the inner corners of the outline if not already drawn on. While doing so, make sure that the holes do not go past the outline. Remove the pet door template from the door.

Apply tape to connect the four holes you drilled. Use a pen to draw lines connecting the outsides of each hole. To cut the opening, consider using a jigsaw. Carefully continue along the pencil line to cut the outline of the pet door. Place the interior and exterior frames on either side of the door. Make sure the frames are flushed with the surface of the door.

Use a level to make sure the frames are even on both sides. Optional: You can use caulking to seal up any gaps on uneven doors. Use a level to make sure the frames are straight and aligned properly.

Hold the pet door in place and tighten the screws. Measure the inside of the track with measuring tape or a ruler from the deepest part up inside the top track and down into the deepest part down inside the bottom track. Don't assume that it's a "standard" size track; it's very important to have accurate measurements. Always compare your track height to adjustment ranges shown for the various dog doors. Hale panels require a slightly different measuring method Standard and Omni panel , these products require you to measure from deepest part of the bottom track up to the track wall, or first feature you touch, when measuring to the top of the track.

When considering the two options, we recommend basing the decision on the type of climate you are living in, and also whether or not you want the panel to be semi-permanent or temporary.

The aluminum option would be better in a warmer climate, where vinyl is better in colder climates because aluminum creates condensation on the door from the cold climate. On the other hand, aluminum would be the better option if your major concern is the ease of removability. The vinyl option would be a semi-permanent installation and less easy to remove.

Dog doors for sliders are offered in various height adjustment ranges and the single most important problem is to be sure that your track height is in the adjustment range of the sliding glass door dog door you're considering. You measure inside the sliding glass door track, the very top to the very bottom. When measuring, don't do it all at once. If you do, the top of the tape will be curving and hard to read where it ends. Instead, measure inside the top track down to a convenient height--say 2 feet--and make a pencil line.

Then measure up from the bottom track to that line and add. This method is extremely accurate. Height adjustment ranges will be shown on the product page for each of these sliding door dog doors.

This needs to be done while you are on the inside of the house looking out. You do need to specify whether your slider closes to the left or to the right so that they can mount the lock correctly.

Pella and Andersen doors don't have the standard metal railing on the bottom of the track or the standard grooved track at the top that Endura Flap, Ideal, and Petsafe use for installation. Hale Omni Panels would be the best panel to install on these locations as they use a tension nut instead of a spring-loaded topper for installation.

Visit the Details tab on the Hale Omni Panel page. Pet doors for sliders use the track walls to hold the panel in place. It is best to contact customer service at x2 to ensure you're finding the best solution for your situation.
