Debian squeeze install software raid
Durringt he installation, I tried using LVM to join all 4 of my drives but then it complains about there not being a boot partition. How can I get around this issue??? Set the usage for both partitions all 8 of them, in total to "physical volume for RAID". Set the MB partition to bootable. Unless you want full-disk crypto, in which case physical volume for crypto, and passphrase.
Then set up the crypto disks, and use that as a physical volume for LVM. Go ahead and create a volume group out of the RAID5 array, and create a logical volume for rootfs and whatever else. I don't recall if the Squeeze installer had the bug where it'll forget mountpoints if that's not the last thing you set up, but just in case, that's why you're doing this step now, not earlier. Pick finish, and continue the install. When prompted, install grub in the MBR. If it lets you, install in the MBR of all four disks.
Otherwise, you'll want to do that after rebooting. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. If there are no remains from previous RAID installations, each of the above commands will throw an error like this one which is nothing to worry about :.
Hi All, First, Falco,a big thank you for this great tutorial! Since the box is productive in an office, I wanted the whole process to be tested in a VirtualBox machine first, and if OK, easily execute it on the physical machine as well So I've put together all the commands in this tutorial into a script.
It was tested and working on a VirtualBox TurnKey fileserver machine, and since the procedure will be quite the same on the physical box, I will do the same on it after a data backup. In practice this script had to be cut into 3 parts because of the 2 reboots needed during the procedure. Martin Martin 57 5 5 bronze badges. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. Improve this answer.

Ups, here comes the rest: First I install Debian. When it comes to the part where I have to partition my drives, I set two partitions for 2 of my 4 drives.
So two drives will have 2 partitions, each with 1GB and 1,TB partitions. The other 2 drives will just have one partition with RAID10 over it. Did I get it right? You need to do the LVM setup during the install. It is fairly obvious how to do this in the standard Debian installer. Alright, thanks a lot. Then I'll just give it a shot tomorrow. Am I right in my assumption that after installation I do not need to worry about the software RAID and that it is doing everything on its own?
