I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault.

This solved the popping up of WMP :D! Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. But it's always if I'm doing something. Just closed a program? Windows Media Centre opens. Just saved something? Minimizing Firefox to get ready to open something else? You guessed it. But if the computer is idle it won't happen. There is also nothing else apparently wrong with the computer.

I never use Windows Media Centre so I wouldn't even mind getting rid of it but I don't know if Windows Media Player relies on it which I do use for certain video formats from time to time. So unless someone says otherwise, I'd rather just disable it as opposed to removing it. I ended both WMP entries in task manager and they both reappeared within seconds.

I think the entries were wmplayer. I have disabled wmpnscfg. There are no other references to WMP in startup programs that I can find. This also did not work.

I have tried System Restore at two different points prior to this curse but these also did not keep WMP from opening on its own. As others have said, I suspect a registry problem, but I don't know how to fix it.

If I choose to try System Repair, how do I start? There is a Services tab next to the Processes tab in Task Manager. That might work. I mean you have nothing to lose at this point. Question is, whether you have a restore point from the time before this problem started. This will list all your shadows restore points. If you find one that is from the time before the problem occured, come back and I show you how to recover you whole WMP program folder from there.

But maybe I missed it. But I now saw that he already reset to prior restore points. So recovering the WMP folder may not help either. The only other idea that comes to mind is a conflict with another program. But which one? It could also be a recent MS update he installed. Strange problem! Before renaming WMPlayer. Knowing what program is launching WMP may tell us why it's appearing.

I have downloaded Process Explorer and I see that wmplayer. How do I check the parent process? Keep in mind I'm venturing into new waters here. As far as the process column, it appears wmplayer is subindentured sp? Incidentally, I tried killing the process here and wmplayer just kept duplicating itself and reopening rerunning. Okay skc7, i was reading another post Lighthouse's and i was in deep thought about a solution to your problem.

Try this:. Note which ones startup is set to Manual and Automatic. Right click on Windows Media Player. If not: Right click on Windows Media Player. Note which ones you have disabled. Just incase it doesn't work we can set them back. Double click on the process and it should list the parent process. Though the one above in the tree should be the parent process. That has never happened on my computer.

You should try using ShellExView to check for any non-Microsoft as I know the builtin Microsoft ones don't do that shell extensions that maybe launching it. There are about 36 of them. Do any of them look strange? A lot of them look strange to me, however most, if not all, are audio or video formats, clips, shows, MIDIs, etc.. Therefore I don't really see anything out of place. If you like I could try listing them.

I tried killing the explorer. When I try killing just the WMP process, it reappears in a few seconds. Kind of reminds me of the Aliens movies.

I have not tried ShellExView yet. There is only one entry in services. That is wmpnetwk. Stopping this entry does not stop it. Disabling it also does not work immediately, however do I have to reboot because maybe this is only disabling it in startup? Remember, I'm a litte new at this diagnostic stuff. I'll try the restarting thing and see what happens. Re closing explorer: That is the expected thing to happen. Windows Explorer provides the desktop icons, desktop context menu, taskbar, start menu and file browser in Windows.

So when closed those things go away. If it's auto launching WMP, then that is quite odd. Windows Explorer should only launch WMP in responce to a user's action like clicking on a start menu item. Based on the wmpnetwk. This might be why WMP keeps popping up. Maybe it thinks there is a media extender out there that it needs to serve. Anyway, let's turn this off, if you haven't already with the service.

Restarting did not help. I have not contacted the manufacture, I assume you mean of the computer? The computer is a Dell Inspiron I purchased it directly from Dell in February My understanding is Dell is not responsible for software Vista issues? I cannot imagine this being a hardware issue.

If Dell does address a Vista issue they indicate they will charge me big bucks.
